What is Mesh WiFi?

Picture, if you will, your WiFi network doesn't cover your entire house. Certain areas aren't as strong as they should be. You could use a WiFi extender, but this stretches the signal only so far.

My house, for example, is an old Victorian manor. Regular WiFi networks only cover the first floor, creating what are called "dead areas" out of the second and third floors. The solution at the time was installing a WiFi extender, but this still didn't cover the entire house.
This is where Mesh Networking comes in.

A Mesh Network is a communications network formed from the arrangement of radio nodes, or rather, connection points, organized into a kind of mesh pattern. These points can be routers or any router -like devices, such as cellular devices. These devices will work together to form the network.

But what if one of the nodes stop working? No worries, the rest of the nodes will still communicate with each other through one or more intermediate nodes.

Below is a diagram showing the interconnection of the nodes,
A wireless mesh network is a self-forming and self-healing network, or in simpler terms, if one node becomes damaged or malfunctions, the network will bypass the node and relay the signal to any of the other existing nodes.

It is, without a doubt, a superior means of supplying larger homes with a stable wireless connection. Basically, it's a stronger version of a wifi extender, but instead of creating a separate network to connect to, mesh networking merely relays the signal from one node to another. This, essentially, is boosting the signal of the already existing network.

Although, with every superior technology, comes high costs. Not to mention the fact that companies are still competing to be the go-to company for the technology. Two of the bigger competitors for this technology are Netgear and Google. Netgear's brand of Mesh WiFi currently runs around $250, whereas Google's only runs for about $120.

Now that's only two companies in this competition, there are more, but I wanted to simply give you an idea of what the markets like out there. The best course of action is to wait and see which company comes out on top.
